Van Gundy called the Kings handling of the situation "inexcusable." See Van Gundy's full take on the situation in the two videos below
Augustin and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Pistons coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy said the team is looking to add a third point guard, but he's not sure how just yet.

"We definitely got to get a third point guard, there's no question," Van Gundy said. "To go out and get a guy who would be a huge difference maker, you'd probably really have to give up something that would hurt you down the road. We're not in panic time here. We're not gonna do that and be sitting here in the summer kicking ourselves for trying to do something short term that would hurt us in the long term.

"What I think we'll do is take our best available option. Either we're happy with what we would have to give up and can live with or we just get the best of what we don't have to give up anything to get.

"We want to fight and win as many games as we can, there's no question. At the same time, we're not giving away players ... in that type of rebuild, just tanking games and whatever. At the same time, we're not at the point in our process where we're going to give up assets in the future to try to get an additional three or four wins this year. We're in between. We're going to do as well as we can and stay as prudent as we can in our decision making going forward."

Jennings has successful surgery

The Pistons announced Tuesday that Jennings underwent successful surgery to repair a rupture left Achilles' tendon. There is no timetable for his return.

Van Gundy said he's been in contact with Jennings, but hasn't had the chance to talk to him on the phone.

"The things is, I've been hesitant to call because he's on all those medications and things, I don't want to wake him up," Van Gundy said. "A text he sort of gets whenever he gets it. I'm going to wait until he gets out of these first couple days and try to leave him alone, but we've been communicating."Dave Pembertonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06613207206667934078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6131862361468808260.post-14787266923298904412015-01-09T18:31:00.000-05:002015-01-09T18:31:21.436-05:00Van Gundy's "form a wall" timeout has become a rallying cry for Pistons fansPistons coach Stan Van Gundy unintentionally created a rallying cry for Pistons fans during a timeout with 0.1 seconds left in Detroit's win over San Antonio Tuesday.

The Pistons led by one after a Brandon Jennings layup and the Spurs only had enough time to tip a shot in, not catch and shoot it. So Van Gundy wanted his team to just defend the basket from a tip in. The words Van Gundy used to describe how to defend the play have gone viral. Van Gundy unaware what he was saying was being broadcast just yelled, "We just form a (expletive) wall."

People have begun selling t-shirts with the phrase online and the saying has inspired countless memes and videos on social media.

See Van Gundy's reaction to it all in the video below. And if you want to hear the unedited version of his now famous timeout click the video below it, but warning it contains profanity.
The trio didn't have much success last season, but after an 0-3 start and injuries to several perimeter players, the Pistons are going to give the lineup a try against New York.

It appears Greg Monroe will remain a Piston, at least for next season. According to USA Today’s Jeff Zillgitt, Monroe will sign a one-year qualifying offer for $5.479 million next season and become an unrestricted free agent after next season.

It’s a risky move for Monroe, who will have to avoid injury and have another solid season to earn the big pay day he was hoping to get this offseason.

There are no guarantees he will ever be able to recoup the money he will be this upcoming season by signing the qualifying offer.

The positive for Monroe is next offseason he will be free to sign anywhere he pleases.

Monroe was a restricted free agent this season which made teams reluctant to sign him to an offer sheet when odds are the Pistons would match.

There are even reports Monroe and his agent David Falk didn’t seek any offer sheets because he didn’t want to give the Pistons the option to match. Monroe and Falk were reportedly seeking a sign-and-trade deal, but couldn’t find a trade the Pistons would agree to.

Monroe signing the qualifying offer likely means his days as a Piston are numbered. The Pistons could trade him before the trade deadline this season or risk having him walk away for nothing next summer, but teams will be reluctant to trade for Monroe unless he agrees to an extension beforehand.

Monroe has spent his first four seasons with the Pistons, who took him with the No. 7 pick in the 2010 draft.

He averaged 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds last season, but the frontcourt of Monroe, Josh Smith and Andre Drummond did not mesh well.

The crowded frontcourt could be a major reason why Monroe doesn’t want to sign a long-term deal with the Pistons.

The Pistons reportedly offered Monroe a five-year, $60 million deal, but Monroe Tweeted earlier this week that wasn’t true by saying, “Can’t reject anything that was not offered to me...carry on.”

Sporting a newly shaved head, Rodney Stuckey was able to break out of his recent slump, finishing with 23 points, four assists and three rebounds to help the Pistons defeat the Kings 99-89 Tuesday.

“Being able to get him to play the way he’s capable of playing it’s always a plus for this team,” Pistons forward Josh Smith said. “He came in, got a new haircut so I think his swag was turned up a little bit tonight. In order for us to be successful we need him to be able to play like the Rodney Stuckey that we know he’s capable of.”

Prior to Tuesday, Stuckey averaged 4.3 points, one assist and one rebound in his last three, all Pistons losses. Against the Kings Stuckey came into the game in attack mode. He was 5 for 7 from the filed in the first half, hitting all six of his free throw attempts to finish with 16 in the half.

“Second quarter, Rodney played probably as well as he’s played in quite a while,” Pistons coach John Loyer said. “I’ve seen Rodney do that in many games and he’s more the capable of doing it. He just attacked down hill, got to the free-throw line and really put them back on their heels.”

Loyer felt Stuckey’s aggressive play helped inspire the rest of the team.

“I thought when Stuck came in we started attacking down hill,” Loyer said. “I thought we settled for a few jump shots early. It was kind of contagious. Rodney got in the lane anytime he really wanted. Put his head down, didn’t settle for jump shots. When you see somebody doing that, the next second, third guy, it’s a little easier for them to do it.”

Big ‘D’ from Drummond
Andre Drummond had a tough defensive assignment going against the Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins, but the second-year center was up to the task, holding Cousins to 13 points on 5 for 15 shooting.

Drummond finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in 33 minutes.

“Sometimes it isn’t about the numbers, it’s how you play,” Loyer said. “I thought it was one of Andre’s better games. I thought he did a much better job in the post. I thought his defense was good. We were flicking at it. We had good digs from our guards. I thought Andre’s intent to guard in the post and Greg (Monroe’s) intent to guard in the post was very, very good. To control a player like Cousins, you have to do a good job and they both did.”

No regrets
The Pistons (25-39) trail the Hawks (27-35) by three games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Smith said the Pistons goal is to still make the playoffs and he intends to leave it all on the court in the final 18 games.

“We’re trying to play for something,” Smith said. “I think we’re two or three games out being able to accomplish our No. 1 goal and that was make it to the postseason. I have to be able to contribute. I don’t want to sit at home in April and think about what I could have done. I just want to try to leave it all out there on the floor.”Dave Pembertonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06613207206667934078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6131862361468808260.post-18543306150430764972014-03-11T18:22:00.001-04:002014-03-11T18:22:33.351-04:00TOUT VIDEOS: Pistons coach John Loyer pregame 3-11-14

Outside won.

Detroit scored 76 points in the paint, which is a season-high in the NBA this season, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Los Angeles’ outside shooting.

The Lakers hit 14 3-pointers, while the Pistons hit just 1 of 8 in the Los Angeles’ 106-102 victory.

The Lakers shot 45.2 percent from 3. Wesley Johnson went 6 for 7, while Shawne Williams was 6 or 11.

“We gotta figure out our defensive schemes,” Pistons guard Brandon Jennings said. “We’re switching like five plays down then the next we’re not. Guys are just confused down the stretch. We need to figure out from the coaches from us, we all need to figure out what are we doing and what defenses are we in.”

Offense falters

Jennings scored six straight points to put the Pistons up 99-91 with 4:22 left Friday. The Pistons scored just three points the rest of the way.

The Lakers went on a 12-0 run before Jennings hit a jumper with 50.2 seconds left.
Jennings had a chance to tie the game when he was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 16.7 seconds, but hit just one of the three free throws.

“I kind of put that on myself for missing those two free throws down the stretch,” Jennings said. “That’s something I live for. I’m a guy that’s been known to knock them down. To see two of them rattle in and out, that hurts.”

Los Angeles’ Jordan Farmar missed two free throws, leaving the door open for the Pistons.

Detroit went to Rodney Stuckey on their final two possessions. Stuckey missed a running layup on the first one, but the Pistons caught a break when the rebound went off the Lakers.

The Pistons went to Stuckey again and he was forced to pass to Josh Smith, who was called for a charge.

“I missed a layup that I should have made when I took the ball out,” Stuckey said. “The last play, I didn’t have anywhere to go so I wasn’t trying to force it. Josh was right there, I threw him the ball. It’s just what it was. At the end of the day it’s a game. We’ll watch game film, try to get better, try to get one on Sunday.”

Jennings didn’t touch the ball on the final two Pistons’ possessions despite scoring Detroit’s last 11 points. Jennings was 5 for 7 in the fourth quarter. He was asked if he wanted the ball on the final possessions and said, “Yeah of course.

“Not even trying to shoot the ball, just trying to make something happen,” Jennings said. “We also got another guy, Stuckey, who can make something happen too. He’s way stronger than me so he can get in there and get fouls. I kind of feel like I had it going a little bit in the fourth, knocking down some shots and also getting to the basket. But hey we just gotta roll with it.”

Drummond sits

Andre Drummond picked up his fourth foul with 9:09 left in the third quarter. Pistons coach Mo Cheeks elected not to play Drummond the rest of the game, sitting Drummond the final 21 minutes.

“I could have did that, but I thought we needed to score,” Cheeks said of putting Drummond back in the game. “That was the reason why I didn’t. He had the four fouls and (the Lakers) had the small lineup out there. When they had the small lineup out there I thought we needed to score, that’s why I kept Greg (Monroe) in the game as opposed to Andre. But hindsight is 20-20. I could have put him back in and he probably could have got a couple of those rebounds because one possession they had three or four offensive rebounds and that allowed them to get another 3-point shot.”

The Lakers had six offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter, including three on one possession during Los Angeles’ 12-0 run that saw the Lakers go from down eight to up four.

Drummond finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds in 16 minutes. He put the blame on himself for not playing much in the second half.

“It’s tough,” Drummond said. “I made a stupid play, got a foul, got my fourth, have to sit on the bench. It was my fault. I should have never took the foul, but it happens. It’s a domino effect, one thing leads to another and everybody starts to fall.”Dave Pembertonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06613207206667934078noreply@blogger.com0
